James 1 — Faith That Stands Through the Storm
James 1
Life doesn't always go the way we expect.
There are seasons when everything seems to be going well, and then suddenly we find ourselves facing a trial we never saw coming. We may wonder why God allowed it, how long it will last, or what we are supposed to do while we are going through it.
James begins his letter with an unexpected message:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials.”
— James 1:2, NKJV
At first, that can be difficult to understand.
James isn't telling us to enjoy suffering or pretend that difficult circumstances don't hurt. He is teaching us to look at trials from God's perspective.
Trials can produce something valuable in us.
Trials Can Build Our Faith
James continues:
“Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
— James 1:3, NKJV
Faith that has never been tested can remain shallow.
But when we walk through difficult circumstances while continuing to trust God, our faith grows stronger.
A trial may test our patience.
It may test our trust.
It may test whether we will continue praying when the answer doesn't come quickly.
It may test whether we will continue believing God's promises when our circumstances seem to contradict them.
God can use those moments to develop spiritual endurance within us.
“But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
— James 1:4, NKJV
The goal isn't simply to survive the trial.
God can use the trial to grow us.
Ask God for Wisdom
Sometimes the hardest part of a trial is not knowing what to do.
Should we wait?
Should we act?
Should we change direction?
Should we keep praying?
James gives us a straightforward answer:
Ask God.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
— James 1:5, NKJV
What a wonderful promise.
God doesn't criticize us for needing wisdom.
He doesn't tell us we should already know everything.
He invites us to ask.
When you don't know what to do, pray.
When you don't know which direction to take, pray.
When you don't understand what God is doing, pray.
When you're facing a decision that feels too big for you, pray.
God gives wisdom generously.
Faith Requires Trust
James then reminds us that when we ask God for wisdom, we should ask in faith.
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting.”
— James 1:6, NKJV
This doesn't mean we will never have questions or moments of uncertainty.
It means we choose to trust God's character even when we don't understand His plan.
Faith doesn't require us to know everything.
Faith requires us to trust the One who does.
God Is Not the Author of Temptation
James also makes an important distinction between trials and temptation.
A difficult circumstance may test our faith, but God does not tempt us to sin.
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.”
— James 1:13, NKJV
James explains that temptation begins when we allow our own desires to draw us away from God.
This reminds us that we need to take responsibility for the choices we make.
We cannot blame God for our sin.
But we can bring our struggles to Him and ask Him for strength to overcome temptation.
Every Good Gift Comes From God
In the middle of his teaching about trials and temptation, James reminds us of God's goodness.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.”
— James 1:17, NKJV
When life is difficult, it can be easy to focus entirely on what is going wrong.
James reminds us to remember what is right.
God is good.
His character does not change simply because our circumstances do.
There are blessings around us that we can easily overlook when we are focused on our troubles.
Take time to recognize them.
Thank God for the people He has placed in your life.
Thank Him for His Word.
Thank Him for salvation.
Thank Him for another day.
Thank Him for His faithfulness.
Even in difficult seasons, there is always reason to remember the goodness of God.
Be Doers of the Word
One of the most practical lessons in James 1 comes near the end of the chapter.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
— James 1:22, NKJV
It is possible to hear God's Word regularly without allowing it to change the way we live.
We can read Scripture without obeying it.
We can listen to sermons without applying them.
We can know what the Bible says while continuing to live as though we don't.
James challenges us to move beyond simply hearing God's Word.
Live it.
If Scripture tells us to forgive, we forgive.
If Scripture tells us to love others, we love others.
If Scripture tells us to pray, we pray.
If Scripture tells us to trust God, we learn to trust Him, even when trusting Him is difficult.
Our faith should be visible in the way we live.
A Faith That Shows Itself
James 1 ends by describing what genuine religion looks like.
“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”
— James 1:27, NKJV
True faith isn't merely something we talk about.
It changes how we treat people.
It changes how we respond to suffering.
It changes how we live when nobody is watching.
God calls us to care for those who are vulnerable and to guard our lives against the influence of a world that pulls us away from Him.
Our faith should affect our actions.
A Thought for Today
James 1 asks us to look beyond what is happening to us and consider what God may be doing in us.
Are you facing a difficult trial right now?
Don't give up.
Ask God for wisdom.
Trust Him through the process.
Allow Him to strengthen your faith.
And don't simply hear His Word.
Put it into practice.
You may not understand why you are walking through this particular season, but you can trust the God who is walking through it with you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your faithfulness through every season of life.
When I face trials, help me not to lose heart. Give me the strength to continue trusting You when I don't understand what You are doing.
Lord, give me wisdom when I don't know what to do. Help me to ask You in faith and trust Your answer, even when it isn't the answer I expected.
Protect my heart from temptation. Help me recognize the things that draw me away from You and give me the strength to choose what is right.
Thank You for every good and perfect gift You have given me. Help me to notice Your blessings even during difficult seasons and to remain thankful for Your goodness.
Most importantly, help me to be a doer of Your Word and not merely a hearer. Let my faith be visible in the way I live, speak, love, forgive, and treat others.
Help me become more like Christ each day.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
