1 Peter 1 — A Living Hope
1 Peter 1
Peter's first letter begins with a message that believers need just as much today as they did when he first wrote it:
Peter was writing to Christians who were facing trials and suffering. Their circumstances weren't easy, but Peter wanted them to remember something greater than their circumstances—their salvation, their living hope, and the eternal inheritance waiting for them with Christ.
Our circumstances may change from day to day, but the hope we have in Jesus does not change.
A Living Hope
Peter begins by reminding believers that God has given us something that cannot be destroyed.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
— 1 Peter 1:3, NKJV
Our hope isn't based on wishful thinking.
It isn't based on having a perfect life.
It isn't based on having enough money, good health, or everything going according to plan.
Our hope is based on Jesus Christ and His resurrection.
Because Jesus rose from the dead, our hope is alive.
That means even when life feels uncertain, we have something secure to hold onto.
An Inheritance That Cannot Fade Away
Peter continues by reminding believers that their inheritance is being kept for them in heaven.
“To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”
— 1 Peter 1:4, NKJV
Everything we have on earth is temporary.
Homes can be lost.
Money can disappear.
Possessions wear out.
Our circumstances change.
But what God has promised His children is different.
Our heavenly inheritance is incorruptible.
It cannot be spoiled.
It cannot fade.
And it cannot be taken away.
What a comforting thought.
We may lose things in this life, but we cannot lose what God has prepared for us in eternity.
Faith That Is Tested
Peter doesn't pretend that Christians will never experience hardship.
Instead, he acknowledges that trials are part of this life.
“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials.”
— 1 Peter 1:6, NKJV
Peter doesn't say that trials aren't painful.
He says believers can still rejoice even while grieving.
Those two things can exist together.
You can be hurting and still have hope.
You can be disappointed and still trust God.
You can cry and still have faith.
You can go through a difficult season and still know that God hasn't abandoned you.
Trials test our faith, but they can also strengthen it.
Peter compares tested faith to gold being refined by fire.
The fire doesn't destroy the gold.
It removes impurities.
In the same way, difficult seasons can reveal what we are truly trusting in and draw us closer to God.
Loving Someone We Cannot See
Peter says:
“Whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.”
— 1 Peter 1:8, NKJV
We haven't physically seen Jesus.
Yet we love Him.
We believe in Him.
We trust Him.
And we look forward to the day when faith becomes sight.
There will be a day when we no longer have to say, "I believe even though I cannot see."
We will see our Savior face to face.
Until then, we walk by faith.
Be Holy
Peter then turns from our hope to the way we should live because of that hope.
“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”
— 1 Peter 1:15, NKJV
Our salvation isn't simply about what happens after we die.
It changes how we live today.
Because God has called us to Himself, we should desire to live differently.
Holiness doesn't mean pretending we're perfect.
It means belonging to God and allowing Him to change us.
It means asking:
Does the way I'm living reflect the One I claim to follow?
Our words matter.
Our attitudes matter.
Our choices matter.
Our relationships matter.
What we do when nobody is watching matters.
God has called us to live for Him in every area of our lives.
We Were Redeemed
Peter reminds us that our salvation came at a great price.
“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ.”
— 1 Peter 1:18–19, NKJV
We weren't purchased with money.
We were redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
That should change how we see ourselves.
You are not worthless.
You are not forgotten.
You are not without purpose.
Christ gave Himself for you.
Your value isn't determined by your circumstances, your possessions, your accomplishments, or what other people think about you.
Your salvation reminds you of just how precious you are to God.
The Word of God Endures
Peter finishes this chapter by reminding us that earthly things don't last forever.
“The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
— 1 Peter 1:24–25, NKJV
People change.
Circumstances change.
Our bodies change.
The world changes.
But God's Word remains.
When everything around us feels uncertain, we can stand on something that isn't changing.
God's Word endures forever.
That's why we don't build our lives on circumstances.
We build them on Christ and His Word.
A Thought for Today
Maybe you're walking through a difficult season right now.
Maybe you're waiting for God to answer a prayer.
Maybe you're dealing with circumstances you never expected.
Maybe you're wondering how everything is going to work out.
1 Peter 1 reminds you that your circumstances aren't the foundation of your hope.
Jesus is.
Your hope is alive because Christ is alive.
Your inheritance is secure.
Your faith can endure the fire.
Your Savior is worth loving even when you cannot see Him.
And God's Word will still be standing when everything else has passed away.
So today, hold onto your living hope.
Your circumstances may change, but Jesus doesn't.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me a living hope through Jesus Christ.
When life is difficult, help me remember that my hope isn't found in my circumstances. My hope is found in You.
Give me strength when my faith is being tested.
When I don't understand what You are doing, help me trust You.
Help me remember that the trials I face are temporary, but the inheritance You have promised is eternal.
Teach me to live a holy life that honors You.
Help me remember the great price that was paid for my salvation—the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
When everything around me feels uncertain, help me stand firmly on Your Word.
Thank You for being faithful.
Thank You for my salvation.
And thank You that because Jesus lives, I have a living hope.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
